Learning to think for yourself in recovery.

Many times in recovery we are taught not to think. After a short while in recovery though, we have to think, what these steps mean to us. How these steps apply to our lives. A sponsor can guide us but we have to find what works for us. We have to find our higher power that we have faith in.

If we are taught not to think some of us will agree and just shut our minds off. When we do shut our minds off we are not being open minded. To grow in recovery we will need to increase our ability to put the steps in our life. Also we will need to find sober solutions to issues in our lives.

Many of my resentments in my 4rth step could have been avoided or lessened if I would have been able to think for myself. What I mean is things that ended up being resentments were things were I sat back and took no action. In my estimation there were problems I had that I had to find the solutions for. Yes, I would bounce them off a sponsor. But a sponsor can’t be inside my mind and heart.

One example will illustrate. I had issues where I would be distracted by peoples opinions or things people shared I didn’t agree with. ( I would be distracted by people in my gym also) My solution for me was that there is only 1 person in the meeting (or the gym) that I need to be concerned with minding their business. There is only 1 persons recovery I need to be focused on. That person I need to be focused on is me. Then I can help others.
