Putting the steps into my life !!

My posts are my opinion and not the opinion of any program. Probably the most important part of changing in recovery is putting the steps into my life. Of course people will read the steps and talk their sponsor. I do that and it is very important.

It does say in the big book that we should read the steps and find what they mean to us. This is something we will need to learn over time. We will need to look to ourselves to apply the steps to situations in our lives. For me turning it over in the 3rd step has to include my thinking, my feelings, my opinions, my judgement and everything. What I am really turning over is control over the outcome of situations. Of course I m very responsible for the efffort in situations but the result has to be up to God.

Prior to coming into program and having the 3rd step, I thought the world revolved around me. When something happened I didn’t agree with I got very bent out of shape. If things didn’t go the way I wanted I got very very frustrated. I thought I knew all the answers to how the world should be spinning. The only way I saw the world was through my own viewpoint with blinders on.

It says in the big book “we had to quit playing God” . We gave up control over things we could not control anyway. God is controlling the world. I want to live my life with peace and sanity. I moved away from my master plan and wanted to contribute to life. (and to make own life better)

It is a great freedom to not have to run the world. Now I can try to have a life with health and sanity.

Learning to think for yourself in recovery.

header.jpg

Many times in recovery we are taught not to think. After a short while in recovery though, we have to think, what these steps mean to us. How these steps apply to our lives. A sponsor can guide us but we have to find what works for us. We have to find our higher power that we have faith in.

If we are taught not to think some of us will agree and just shut our minds off. When we do shut our minds off we are not being open minded. To grow in recovery we will need to increase our ability to put the steps in our life. Also we will need to find sober solutions to issues in our lives.

Many of my resentments in my 4rth step could have been avoided or lessened if I would have been able to think for myself. What I mean is things that ended up being resentments were things were I sat back and took no action. In my estimation there were problems I had that I had to find the solutions for. Yes, I would bounce them off a sponsor. But a sponsor can’t be inside my mind and heart.

One example will illustrate. I had issues where I would be distracted by peoples opinions or things people shared I didn’t agree with. ( I would be distracted by people in my gym also) My solution for me was that there is only 1 person in the meeting (or the gym) that I need to be concerned with minding their business. There is only 1 persons recovery I need to be focused on. That person I need to be focused on is me. Then I can help others.

There is only 1 persons business I need to mind.

-continued

There is only 1 persons recovery I need to be focused on. That person I need to be focused on is me. Then I can be clear minded to help others.
Yes, another person in recovery can say keep the focus on yourself. Until I felt the true meaning of “the only persons business I need to mind is my own damn business”. I didn’t understand about not being bothered by what people say or their opinion.

Its the same at the gym or at work. I can wonder how much money do they make or how much can they lift? But when I said look there is only 1 person at this workplace whose work I need to be concerned with. It isn’t the other guy!! There is only 1 person at this gym whose health and exercise I need to be concerned with.

When I take a 10th step at night I don’t take this one and that ones inventory. It’s my own inventory that’s going to help me to work the steps

and live a better life.
